Dear J,
Almighty God backs you up to enable you to forgive according to His command/ will. This also applies to other commands we find hard to obey.
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Phil 2:13 NIV
Here are some reminders we can keep in mind to get there.
1. Set our mind on God’s perspective.
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Col 3:2-3 NIV
His perspective is that evil spiritual forces, not people, are our enemies. (Eph 6:12)
We will be forgiven only as much as we forgive. (Matt 6:12)
We will be the ones tormented when we do not forgive. (Matt 18:21-35)
2. Yield our will to His.
““Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”” Luke 22:42 NIV
3. Be in The Word (so it can transform our minds to be attuned to God’s will).
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Rom 12:2 NIV
4. Live the Christ Life, dead to own flesh.
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal 2:20)
5. Constantly ask the Holy Spirit to fill us (Eph 5:18) so we can walk in step with Him.
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Gal 5:16)
